During the 15th and 16th centuries as the Renaissance began to saturate the art and culture of Spain, the tilemakers of Sevilla were uniquely positioned to market their newly developed Cuenca tiles. Wealthy Portuguese merchants had solidified a monopoly over Indian trade and remained aesthetically captive to the horror value which had grown roots into the Iberian Peninsula during the 700-year Moorish Occupation of Andalucia. Meanwhile, Spanish emigrants were gathering enormous wealth from gold and silver miners of the New World. The expanding Empire offered insatiable markets for these workshops, and Cuenca tiles were making history.
